The Sight Word Buster program is simple, structured, and fun. Our volunteers love working with the students and the students love working with the adults. Teachers also love having the extra tutoring assistance in the classroom. It is truly a win/win/win situation.

Rock Creek School Sight Word Busters

The Sight Word Buster Volunteer Program is made up of volunteers that spend, on average, one hour a week working with students in local primary classrooms. At the kinder level volunteers help students learn letter names, sounds and CVC words. They also help these little ones dominate the first 100 sight words. In the 1st and 2nd grades the volunteers help students master a list of 240 high frequency words and help reinforce other reading skills being taught at these grade levels.

Alta Vista Charter School Sigth Word Busters

Linda created the Sight Word Buster Volunteer Program in February of 2010. The trained volunteers started at Rock Creek Elementary School in Auburn, California where first and second grade teachers were already hard at work teaching the long list of high frequency words to their emerging readers. In February of 2011 the Roseville Recreation Center began using the program and in November of 2012 Alta Vista Community Charter School trained its first group of volunteers.

Funding for the student booklets comes from various sponsors within the community and individuals such as local author Joanne Neft, Charlotte and Jaime Laughton, Veda Vogt, Busters Alma Ragan, Monica Barber, Kathy Barger, Carmen Rodriguez, Kristin Hilton, Barbara Read, the Elk's 1691 Club, Umpqua Bank, AAUW, Soroptimist International Historic Auburn and Soroptimist International of Auburn groups and most recently the Placer Community Foundation, specifically, the Elizabeth Jansen Fund and the Jim and Judy Family Fund.

Linda has created a short homemade video to let the Busters and sponsors know just how much their support is appreciated. You can view the video here.

Trained volunteers are invited to access the AUDIO SUPPORT TRACKS here and follow along in the Instructional Booklet distributed during the initial training session. CDs are available upon request.

During the 2014-2015 school year, Sight Word Busters will be volunteering in the following schools: Auburn Elementary School, Alta Vista Community Charter, Rock Creek Elementary School and St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Auburn, First Street Elementary School in Lincoln, and Parker Whitney Elementary School in Rocklin, California.

Community program at local schools gives students a head start in reading comprehension.

Our local Placer Community Foundation, through the Elizabeth Jansen and Judy & Jim Ganulin Funds, sponsored the majority of our materials this year so that we could serve over 700 students in ten surrounding schools. Their November newsletter talks about this support:
