A new school year is bringing back the need for volunteers for an Auburn-area reading program centered on the primary grades. The Sight Word Busters are a group of volunteers who work in area grade schools to teach reading proficiency. Linda LoBue, co-author of Race to Read, said the program helps kids to identify high-frequency words commonly seen in written language. According to LoBue, the program consists of 100 volunteers, but needs as many as 60 more to meet the demand for the proficiency program in the 44 classrooms the program serves. Volunteers spend approximately an hour a week with children in area classrooms. There is no previous tutoring experience required. Trainings will be held from Aug. 25 – 29 at various schools throughout the Auburn area.
